The Cloth

Pha Khao Ma, and why every run ends.

Pha Khao Ma

Pha Khao Ma is a traditional Thai checked cloth, woven for generations.

In Thailand, it is a working cloth. Knotted at the waist in the fields. Tied into a sling to carry a child. By evening, it dries a face, wraps the day's tools, and begins again tomorrow. One length of fabric, asked to do everything — and it does.

It is the same cloth we use for every pair of Little Cousin pants. Woven tight, in durable cotton. It does not wear thin at the knee. It does not fray at the seams.

Meow and Dae

Behind every pair of Little Cousin pants are two tailors: Meow and Dae Puangthong, working out of Bangkok, Thailand.

They cut and sew each pair themselves. Because the fabric comes to them a little differently each time, no two pieces of cloth are quite the same — so every pair asks something different of them. It's a craft passed down through the family, done with the same care Meow and Dae bring to everything they make.

It's slow work, and it shows. The kind of care that only comes from two hands and a lot of attention.
